While the conventional path suggested immediate immersion in the fashion industry through internships and freelance roles, Fan harbored a deeper ambition: independence and the realization of her own creative vision. This desire led her to forge a new trajectory, culminating in her current role as a full-time designer for the burgeoning New York City-based fashion label, Tang Chi Couture. The brand, known for its avant-garde reinterpretation of classic silhouettes infused with striking details, has rapidly gained traction within the editorial landscape. In a recent interview with EnVi, Fan shared insights into the trials and triumphs that have shaped her burgeoning career.
From Taipei’s Charm to New York’s Pulse: A Foundation in Fashion
Fan’s early fascination with fashion was deeply rooted in her upbringing in Taiwan. Her formative years were influenced by the sartorial elegance of her mother, whose extensive walk-in closet served as an early source of inspiration. Fan recalled her mother’s meticulous approach to dressing for events, describing it as an early precursor to modern style inspiration content. Witnessing her sister’s work in styling photoshoots and her passion for fashion archive books, Fan found herself drawn to the visual narratives presented within those pages, admitting to "sneaking into her room and just looking at those beautiful images."
This innate inclination eventually led Fan to the United States, where she has resided in New York City for over six years. She describes the city not only as a global fashion capital but as a dynamic environment that offers an unending source of stimulation. "You might get sick of New York City, but you would never get bored in New York City," she stated, underscoring its vibrant and multifaceted character.
Despite establishing her career in the American fashion mecca, Fan remains deeply connected to her Taiwanese heritage. The natural forms found in Taiwan’s environment frequently inspire the silhouettes and details of her designs. Furthermore, her upbringing instilled in her a more measured approach to the creative process. "We live at a much slower pace than New York so it really affected me to have me slow down in my design process," she explained, highlighting the influence of her roots on her design methodology. This fusion of her cultural background with her creative aspirations has allowed her to cultivate a distinct design language that feels both personal and universally resonant.

"You design while you create something in the process and then I lend it to the things that I like," she elaborated, illustrating her iterative design technique.

"I enjoy seeing all those creatives out there, like the stylists or artists, how they sort of restyle my garments and give new life into the clothing that I created," she shared. This diverse range of perspectives and interpretations offers Fan a valuable opportunity to gain new insights into her own work, describing it as "a different aspect and perspective that I could give into my own clothing, so it’s definitely interesting to see that."

Stepping Stones to Success: The London Debut and Celebrity Endorsement
The aspiration to showcase at Fashion Week is a common dream for designers, offering a platform to present their creations to industry tastemakers. For Maggie Fan, this dream materialized when Tang Chi Couture was featured in Flair Fashion’s runway showcase in London. This significant opportunity, however, was not without its anxieties. Fan revealed, "I was a little doubtful whether I should launch this couture brand. They reached out to me a few times when I was in college, but I never felt like I was ready for that kind of commitment." Ultimately, she recognized that the timing was opportune, and Tang Chi Couture was poised to fulfill its potential.
One year after her graduation from Parsons, Fan made a courageous decision to step outside her comfort zone. The London presentation marked a pivotal moment, representing the brand’s inaugural runway introduction on an international stage. "It was definitely a big challenge because it’s the first runway that introduced my couture brand and it was overseas in London," Fan recalled. "So it had so many challenges, but I guess I’m the person who really likes to walk out of my comfort zone and take these kinds of challenges to push myself." The event not only showcased her SS26 collection, titled "Silent Marks," but also evoked a sense of nostalgia for London, a city where she had previously studied abroad. The experience brought back fond memories of exploring vintage markets, creating a full-circle moment in her career.
Following her impactful London debut, Tang Chi Couture expanded its reach to Los Angeles through a showroom partnership with L.E.R. Public Relations. This strategic move paved the way for a significant endorsement when celebrity stylist Enrique Melendez took notice of one of Fan’s designs.
The actress Leah Sava Jeffries made a memorable appearance at the season two premiere of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians in December 2025, gracing the red carpet in a striking SS26 look from Tang Chi Couture, designated "Tick-Tock." This unexpected event, which quickly became a viral red carpet moment, provided Fan with a profound sense of validation.
Fan elaborated on the inspiration behind the "Tick-Tock" ensemble, noting, "The accessories were initially inspired by the hour hands on the clock, so I think he sort of related that to the siren and anchor vibes in the show." The stylist’s creative interpretation further enhanced the narrative of the garment. Melendez’s decision to reconfigure the necklace, positioning the longer section at the front, was particularly insightful for Fan, as it resonated with the show’s thematic elements of anchors. "He switched the back of the necklace to the front so the long part kind of resonates with the anchor of the show, and that’s really interesting," she observed.
Beyond Jeffries, Tang Chi Couture draws inspiration from influential figures in popular culture. Fan, a longtime admirer of Lady Gaga, has been inspired by the artist’s fearless evolution of style throughout her career. Similarly, the dark yet elegant aesthetic of actress Anya Taylor-Joy aligns perfectly with the brand’s core identity.
Charting the Future: Storytelling, Innovation, and Personal Growth
Looking ahead, Tang Chi Couture is poised to further define its identity through narrative-driven collections that artfully blend dark romance with sophisticated elegance. Fan has articulated ambitious goals for the upcoming year, stating, "I am planning to do a collection this year. My goal for this year is to really create a new collection and then to participate in New York Fashion Week to have my own show." This statement signifies a deliberate step towards bolder creative expression. Having observed the industry’s reception to her initial offerings, Fan feels prepared to push boundaries. "For the first collection, I kind of held back because I wanted to observe what feedback the industry would give me. But for now, I think I’m ready to push further and challenge myself to do more experimental work," she explained.

Fan expressed her desire to engage in more collaborative projects with stylists and to explore artistic endeavors such as filmmaking. She also aims to leverage the unique backdrop of New York City for her own photoshoots, further integrating the city’s energy into her brand’s visual identity.
Fan’s philosophy for sustained success in the demanding fashion industry centers on maintaining a positive outlook and personal integrity. "Have a kind mindset and don’t be too easily influenced by other people’s opinions. It’s really, really important or else you’ll get too many unhealthy breakdowns throughout this journey. But yeah, just try to stay true to yourself," she advised.
Even amidst the intensity of her work, Fan finds solace in simple pleasures. She often seeks rejuvenation by visiting dog parks, an activity she finds particularly enjoyable in New York City’s abundant green spaces. It is within these moments of respite that Fan continues to absorb the subtle details of her surroundings, which may very well inform future collections. While New York City has served as her educational and professional crucible, Tang Chi Couture is now embarking on a journey into uncharted creative territory.
